Distance Education Centre was established at Kaunas University of Technology in 1996, in the framework of Phare project "Multi-Country Co-Operation in Distance Education".
Mission of the Centre is to promote and develop higher and further education system supported by information communication technologies.
Distance Education Centre is a member of National Distance Education Association (NDEA), Lithuanian Association of Adult Education (LAAE), Nordic-Baltic Countries Distance Education Association (BOLDIC), European Distance Education Network (EDEN).
Staff is 22 full time persons: 1 PhD, 2 PhD candidates, 13 Master Degrees.

Distance Education Centre (DEC) at Kaunas University of Technology aims at improving the quality of distance education services with respect to a demand for education services in the region and regional priorities. DEC has a good quality learning infrastructure and tutors for DE purposes. It can offer:

* WWW, FTP, E-mail, IRC, Discussion group, Internet news, Real Video and videoconference services;
* Web sites, portals designing;
* CD ROM and DVD recording and distributing facilities;
* Video and audio material recording and editing facilities;
* Foreign learning material adaptation for Lithuanian needs.

DEC is strengthening its position in the educational market in Lithuania and Europe. We research in the field of ODL, develop e-learning courses and guides for students as well as for trainers. Staff of Centre builds up the internet portals, virtual communities, virtual learning environments and multimedia material for training and learning. DEC has very skilled staff: researchers, educators, instructional designers, designers, software engineers, multimedia engineers, etc. DEC participates in various Leonardo, Socrates, Phare, Framework 5, Ten, Eureka and other international and national projects in the field of ODL (for more information see http://distance.ktu.lt/).
